THE AÇAÍ HARVEST
Every year the abundant harvests of açaí are made between September and December. The people of the Amazon eagerly await this time of year, as açaí is a typical fruit of this region and its fruity and sweet taste makes it a real delight for the locals. The palm on which the açaí grows has a thin trunk (about 20 cm in diameter) but can reach a height of 20 m, which gives it a very aesthetic and elegant appearance.
Men harvest açaí in the traditional way, just like their ancestors: they climb with the strength of their arms and feet to the top of the long trunks and release the "clusters" of ripe fruits. Then açaí is collected in large baskets and quickly transported to the market in Belém, as there is no better açaí than one eaten fresh. Rich in vitamins, iron and omega 6 and 9 essential fatty acids, açaí is also rich in anthocyanins, which are natural pigments that give it its violet color and also its antioxidant properties.
