In the Amazon, the chestnut or Brazil nut is traditionally grated and pressed to obtain a highly nutritious milk that serves as the basis for the food of local communities. Oil is also extracted from the chestnut with intense emollient properties. To discover all the benefits of this tradition of intensive nutrition, Natura Ekos created the Brown Exfoliating Butter.
Natura Ekos was inspired by the traditional knowledge of chestnuts carried over by the Iratapuru community.

THE CHESTNUT, A FOOD TREASURE.
Chestnut or Brazil nut is the fruit of the chestnut. Gorgeous and generous, he is also considered the king of the forest. The nuts used in the products are collected by two traditional communities: RECA, in the Rondônia region, and the Rio Iratapuru Sustainable Development Reserve in the Pará region, home to the largest chestnut areas in the Amazon. They are harvested according to forest sustainability principles and the harvest is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified. Once harvested, these nuts are usually grated and pressed to obtain nutritious milk that serves as the basis for the diet of the Amazon communities. An oil with emollient properties is also extracted from the chestnut used in the Ekos Castanha line.

THE CHESTNUT, A TREASURE OF NUTRITION AND TRADITIONS
Chestnut, or Brazil nut, is the fruit of Brazil nut. Majestic and generous, she is considered the queen of the forest. It is one of the largest and oldest trees in the Amazon and can grow up to 50 meters high and live to be over 500 years old. In the form of wooden capsules that weigh about 1 kilogram, their fruits contain about two dozen tasty and nutritious nuts and are the main protein source in the forest.

SUSTAINABLE HARVESTING OF THE CHESTNUT

Every March, men from the São Francisco community on the Iratapuru River go up the Iratapuru River to the reserve where the chestnut trees are found. There they collect part of the fruit (70%) that has fallen to the ground for 3 months, while the rest remains in place to feed the animals and allow the forest to regenerate. This sustainable forest management is certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council).

The capsules are then broken into place and the reclaimed chestnuts are washed and chosen in the river: those that float are discarded; the others are taken to the community and handed over to women in charge of the operations. The chestnuts are removed from their hedgehogs and then grated.

When mixing the obtained chips with water, women get a white paste which they knead with their hands for several hours to obtain a very white milk. After removing the oil, all that remains of this paste is a dry dough called "pie". These three foods - milk, oil, and pie - are used daily to feed the whole family. If a young mother does not have enough milk to breastfeed her baby, she gives this milk directly from the high protein chestnut. As for chestnut oil, with its 70% unsaturated fatty acids, it is included in the formulation of products from the Ekos Castanha line.
